The Philosophy of Yoga

Though Yoga is becoming popular today more than any other times earlier, both in the east and the west. The science and philosophy of yoga comes from most ancient times, Yoga was popular few years ago only as exercise. But today many people want to seriously go beyond physical exercise so the necessity arises to understand the philosophy of yoga.

Yoga finds its place in the most ancient text of mankind Vedas. Yoga has been the science taught by Vasista to Rama as recorded in a text several thousands of years old called Yoga Vasista.

Five thousand years ago Krishna taught yoga to Arjuna in the battle field of Kurukshetra which is Bhagavad Gita. Saint Patanjali, saint Swatmarama in recent times (more than thousand years ago) have written texts on Yoga.

The definition and purpose of Yoga from all these texts sum up as a state of inner calmness, peace, harmony and inner balance. It is also a technique to give inner slowness, inner transquility, inner poise and immense joy and satisfaction?

Man is so much stressed out, due to the speed, agitations and uncertainties in the modern world . This results into inner speed and restlessness, which is spreading like an epidemic. A conscious process of calming down is yoga, which is the solution for this problem.

Sri Arbindo, a modern saint of India, defined yoga as a conscious process of helping man to progress from Animal level to human level to God man level to God level, at all personality Levels,

How can practices of various techniques help to calm down mind and give inner harmony?
